Cooklang is free and open source — the language, the parsers, the CLI, the editor. The apps are free too. There’s no investor behind this and nothing to sell but the cloud. Subscribing is what keeps the rest free.
CookBot plans your week from your own recipes, imports from any URL, and runs nutrition reports — macros, calories, allergens — tuning the plan until it hits your targets. A few of the things people ask it:

Because each one costs something every time you use it, and nothing else pays for it. Sync runs on servers we rent. A photo import sends your picture through a vision model; a YouTube, TikTok or Instagram import fetches the video and transcribes it; a batch import from another app runs every recipe through our converter. Recipe-site imports are cheap enough that we keep them free and unlimited. The language, the editor and the apps are open source and free because they don’t cost us anything when you use them. If you’d rather not pay, nothing is locked away: keep your files in a folder you sync yourself, type or paste recipes in, and everything still works. The subscription is for the parts that burn money.
Because it isn’t one. Recipe apps store what you paste into them; Paprika does that brilliantly for $4.99, and if that’s what you need, buy Paprika — your Cooklang files will even import into it. Cook Pro is an assistant that does the work around the recipes: plans the week, adapts it, tracks nutrition, writes the shopping list. Every answer it gives costs us real compute, and one person’s subscriptions fund the open-source language, parsers and editor that stay free for everyone.
The Cooklang language and spec, every parser, the CLI, and the Cook Editor — free and open source, forever, no account needed. The mobile apps are free to download and use with your local recipes. Importing from recipe sites is free and unlimited; photo and social-network imports come with Cook Basic and Cook Pro.
Report templates are free and always will be. The nutrition data behind them —
a maintained, USDA-backed lookup service with allergens and unit conversion — costs money
to run, so it comes with a subscription. Cook Basic gives your own AI access to it through our
open nutrition MCP server
(Cursor, ChatGPT and any MCP-capable agent); Cook Pro builds it into every recipe with nothing to set up. Prefer not to pay? Keep a local
db/ YAML datastore of your own values and the standard
templates work without a subscription. One honest limit: the lookup currently matches
ingredients written in English only. Recipes in other languages still plan and sync fine,
but their nutrition reports will come back empty until we add more languages.

You keep every file. Recipes are plain text on your devices — export is not a feature we sell, it’s the format itself. Sync and CookBot stop; nothing else changes.
We’ll add one once we’ve earned it. An annual plan asks for a year of trust up front; we’d rather you pay monthly and stay because it’s useful. (Founding cooks: your €10 never changes anyway.)
CookBot runs on models we choose and swap as they improve. We don’t sell model names; we sell dinner actually happening.
Cook is built and run by one person — bootstrapped, no investors. The editor and apps are free and open source; Cook Pro pays for the servers, the AI, and the nutrition data the free tools can't cover. Subscribing funds development directly.
